ABOUT CALGARY
Calgary is the largest city in the Canadian province of Alberta, where both Riley and Regan attended university, and where they now live and work. It's the fifth-largest metropolitan area in Canada, hosted the 1988 winter Olympics, and proudly hosts the its NHL hockey team, the Calgary Flames. Calgary is a city economically fed by the energy sector, and acts as company headquarters to many Canadian oil companies.
Like in any major city, there are a TON of things to do in and around Calgary, and we hope that those of you who have never visited might consider taking a couple extra days to explore the city and the gorgeous scenery of the surrounding area.
THINGS TO DO IN CALGARY
- The Calgary Zoo is a very cool day trip, sure to entertain both young and old. One of the things that sets the Calgary Zoo apart is its 'North America' exhibit, which houses a lot of Canadian wildlife (moose, wolves, elk, caribou, bears) not commonly displayed in many other zoos.
- The Glenbow Museum "is Western Canada's largest museum, combining a museum, art gallery, library and archives. Our unique role as both a museum and art gallery means visitors can enjoy world-renowned art and fascinating historical exhibitions all under one roof." Definitely recommended.
- Fort Calgary is another very cool semi-educational/historical trip. Definitely entertaining.
- Fish Creek Provincial Park is in the south of the city, right near the Delta South, and for anyone wanting to enjoy a stroll out in nature, I'd definitely recommend this gorgeous park. It's huge, and it's easy to forget you're in the middle of a city.
- Visit the Rocky Mountains! We really can't stress this enough. We encourage both Canadians and Americans alike to take some time while you're in the area to drive out to Banff National Park and enjoy the sights. The city of Banff has lots to see, and it's only about an hour and a half out of Calgary.
- The Royal Tyrell Museum is the best dinosaur museum I (Regan) have ever been to. It's in the town of Drumheller, also about an hour and a half from Calgary (in the opposite direction of Banff, unfortunately).
